Four forces, one flight

A useful starting point for understanding an aeroplane.

Name the forces

Lift, weight, thrust and drag are the four-force starting point. In steady, level cruise the overall forces balance: lift supports weight and thrust balances drag. This simplified picture describes a particular condition; it is not a claim that every manoeuvre is balanced in the same way.

Look for the job, not just the part

An engine produces thrust, but the aircraft’s motion involves the whole airframe and the surrounding air. Weight includes people, fuel and equipment. Drag is not merely an obstacle behind the aircraft; it is part of the aerodynamic interaction.

Make it a family challenge

Draw four arrows on a paper aeroplane picture and label them. Then ask what would have to change for the aircraft to climb or slow down. Treat the drawing as a conversation starter, not as instructions for operating a real aircraft.
